Planning a grown-up living room when you have kids.

This is a collaborative post*

Kids. They have so much stuff and it gets everywhere. But a living room is to be ‘lived in’ so where is it supposed to go? Our home is rented so there’s very little we can do in terms of decoration. A splash of paint, a shuffle of furniture and potentially you’ve got your self a new look. Here are a few ideas we’re considering.

We love Valspar paint. We’ve used it in many of our rooms now and honestly, wouldn’t go anywhere else for paint. We used to have our living room grey but recently changed it to magnolia to appease our landlord. however, after just a few short months, we’ve released that we are NOT magnolia people. It just doesn’t suit us… and our children are horrendously messy so we’re going back to a darker colour and are opting for this kind of blue

We plan on moving our sofas so that they are facing each other and perhaps introduce a coffee table. It would cut down on the children’s play space, but it would be more of a social space that would encourage conversation.
Our toys are currently stored in tubs along one wall so they are all accessible. Being in huge Ikea fan, I’d love a Kallax unit. with this, we could get rid of our shelves that are used as a dumping ground and everything would have a place. It would also mean that we could have a few nice accessories such as lamps, plants and photo frames that would be out of the reach of little grubby hands.
I wouldn’t mind a luxurious recliner chair for myself too, perhaps like these from Human Touch.

Play Space.

If the house was our own, what I’d really like to do is have a conservatory fitted. This would be an extension of our living room but completely child-friendly. We would have a display wall for their art, bean bags for them to sit on and all their toys can be left out. Knowing how messy my little creatures are, we would insist on self-cleaning conservatory glass that’s one less job for me!
We’d have a nice cosy rug and perhaps a desk or table for them to work at too.

Smart Home

With our Alexa, we control our lighting, tv and music etc is all controlled my one thing. We have the echo dot at the moment but I’d like to upgrade to the new echo show. Perhaps I’d treat the kids to an Xbox too. They’ve never had a games console so it would be a nice addition.

What would you add if you were planning a living room from scratch? Let me know in the comments. I can’t wait to show you what we do in the next month or so.

This is such an inspiring blog post! Many people with kids tend to give up on establishing adult space for themselves, but your blog proves that it is totally achievable. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for commenting. I agree. The kids live here so I’m not about to hide their stuff away but at the same time, I’m not running a day care centre hahaha
