Birthday traditions.

April 27, 2014

It’s occurred to me that it will be Dexter’s first birthday in just over 5 weeks.

Of course we will be marking the occasion with  a gathering of some kind, but I would like to start some kind of tradition. I’ve often seen on Pinterest that some families ask the birthday child some questions and see how the answers change each year (questions like favourite colour, what you want to be when you grow up etc) but I wonder if there are traditions we can start from now. Things that don’t yet rely on his ability to speak or understand the basic workings of the world or be able to form opinions.

Most of us are adults now but our current tradition is to go to mums for a birthday tea. This consists of the usual crowd (close family) gathering for a buffet dinner (sandwiches, crisps, salad, pasta, rice etc) bringing gifts and cards for the birthday person and then of course there is always a cake. With candles (no matter how old we are). Sometime we change it up a bit and have a takeaway or a bbq but the formula is the same and thats our thing

I remember one year at my dads house, he decorated the chair at the end of the table in balloons and streamers and that became the birthday chair. We could start this with Dexter as we can decorate his high chair.

Maybe we could all wear silly hats and the birthday boy gets a birthday crown?

Maybe some sort of message thing for people to write on each year and then save up.

Oh and maybe I could make some sort of special birthday banner or decoration that we can reuse ever year.

Would really appreciate your help on this one guys… What are your special birthday traditions? What little things do you do to make the birthday child feel special? Maybe not even just children, its my birthday in 2 weeks, maybe we could start it from there?

Would love to know what it is you all do. Please share with a comment. Thanks in advance.

Not sure if this really counts as a tradition but I get a mini photoshoot done of Abbie every year on her birthday (think like the queens official birthday portrait haha) and then that photo gets added to the photo wall in order so we can see exactly how she has changed each year.
But I have also kept all of her cards so she can look at them when she is a bit older

Ohh I like the idea of the photos of every year. I could make some sort of feature of it or add something into them maybe. Thanks very much 🙂
